Intimidated!
This is the only word that I can think of that instantly encapsulates the feeling that I had when we began ‘evaporating’!
Not only was this our second record together but it was the firs time I had personally been involved in trying to‘workshop’ a musical project.
I should set the story out in order!
Firstly, my wife, my son & myself had just relocated back to Adelaide from Sydney in Jan 09, this was an emotionally turbulent time for many reasons but the studio had been booked & it was time to get on with the task, also we had sold all our records & there was kind of this expectation upon us, not just from our audience but also from ourselves.
Due to the frenzied atmosphere that generally surrounds shifting from one state to another, I had only written three rough sketches towards the second album, so I was feeling slightly ‘hugely’ under prepared, to say the least!!
A few weeks into getting settled into our friends house, Andrew & I got together to try to prepare more professionally & thankfully he had written quite a few pieces, a fair few of which I instantly related to!!
One balmy Sunday night, Andrew & I headed into Sodypop to put his ideas down, just roughly, so that I would have something to toy with lyrically!!
As soon as I had them home, I listened for a few hours & then named them all!
That way I could indentify them but also, because I had named them according to their feel, I had a theme to work to!!
Gradually over the next few weeks, I stood outside on Mark Smith’s patio & played them, over & over & over…..
When I felt that I had strong lines in my head, then I would sing them out loud to the CD player, his neighbour must have thought I was practicing for some kind of bad new age Karaoke, still, I persisted with this method until I was happy with the resulting themes & lyrics & eventually it became time to take it all into the studio!!
April, 09
And so, in we went, guns blazing & made up a record from scratch, the results of which I could not be prouder!!
